The Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 Slate

Linda A. Epstein ~ October 2011

An Editors Choice Tablet PC is a Tablet that offers not just bells and whistles, but a great combination features that people need and use on a regular basis, good value and a machine that offers uses an exceptional computing experience right out of the box.  The Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 Tablet is all of that and more.

To begin with the Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 is not not a "companion device" like the iPad2, it is full featured computer running Windows 7 Professional operating system, which means that users can install and run all of their current Windows programs on it.

For the record, I do not have anything against the Apple OS or Android, however I find that for myself as well as for the the average user if you can only afford or only want to carry one computer around with you, a Tablet running the Windows OS gives you the most flexibility and by far the best productivity.

If you don't want to change the way you work and you use Microsoft Office, Outlook and programs like Adobe Photoshop and Dreamweaver and Flash, your going to love the Stylistic Q550 because you don't have to change the way you work.

The Intel Atom Z670 processor isn't the fastest or most powerfully horse in the staple, but it gets the job done.  Would I like to see the option of an Q550 Tablet with an Intel core i7 processor, on the Q550 - With out question, but how many people would be willing to pay the price is questionable at best.

Size does matter and so does security....   I've always enjoyed using a slate style tablet but for security I very much appreciate being able to log into a tablet using biometrics.  Most of today's new slates do not have finder print readers but this is another detail that did not escape Fujitsu when designing the Q550.

The Q550 has a 10.1 inch screen and a 10.1 inch screen is easy to see, easy to carry around, easy hold in one hand, easy to put in your purse or briefcase and easy to work on.    For the average person a 7 inch screen lacks enough screen real estate to work on working comfortable.   In addition to that for those of us with less than perfect vision the 10.1 screen on the Q550 means you can see what your doing so you don't have to take out your glasses to use it.

In true Fujitsu fashion the screen on Q550 Tablet is crystal clear and a pleasure to look at.  I chose the brightly colored Scarlet and Hyacinth Macaws for backgrounds for this review to try to show you the depth and brilliance of the colors displayed on the WXGA LED backlit IPS display.  As you can see from the photos the display is beautiful and it is easy to see both indoors and outside.

It's clear that the powers that be at Fujitsu were listening to what people wanted and they designed the Stylistic Q550 Tablet to included all the features, button's and ports users need to be productive .   With an Intel® Atom™ Z670 (1.5 GHz) 2.GB RAM, Windows 7 Professional, Capacitive multi-touch screen with digital pen input, hot swappable batteries, excellent security features, Fingerprint sensor, SD slot, USB & HDMI ports, SmartCard reader slot and more, If you were waiting for something thin and light like the iPad but you want a computer that allows you to run flash, Microsoft Office & Outlook your going to be very happy with the Fujitsu Stylistic Q550 Tablet PC.

If you have read my past reviews you know that i hate clutter on my desktop and i dislike having to waste my time uninstalling programs before i use a machine.  In what may be an industry first, Fujitsu leaves the desktop free of unnecessary clutter, which i very much appreciate. Fujitsu does include a Bonus Apps folder which includes a Battery Utility, Nuance OSK , OmniPass Fingerprint Utility, On-Screen Touchpad, Port Shutter, Power Saver Utility, Touch Launcher and Touch Note Pad programs that users can install at their own discretion.

The Stylistic Q550 Tablet switches from pen to touch automatically so there are no issues if your hand is resting on the screen when your writing.  When your not using the pen the Stylistic Q550 automatically switches to the touch interface.   The pen for the Stylistic Q550 Tablet comes with two tethers so that you don't lose it, but t because the Q550 is to think to accommodate a pen holder.  There is no question that I would rather than a pen with out a holder than a Tablet with no pen.

The capacitive multi-touch is user friendly and very responsive. You can use touch gestures to navigate web pages and draw in programs such as paint.

Fujitsu Q550 USB and HDMI ports

On the right side of the Stylistic Q550 there are buttons for applications and switching from landscape to portrait mode as well as a switch for turning the wireless on and off.   Having those buttons accessible makes the Stylistic Q550 a pleasure to use.  Also worth noting is the fact that the buttons are fingernail friendly.
